NGT Warns UP Officials Over Illegal Sand Mining, Threatens Prosecution
January 31, 2026
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has warned top officials in Uttar Pradesh over illegal sand mining in the Kanpur region. The NGT found that the Director of Geology and Mining and the Member Secretary of the UP Pollution Control Board did not follow earlier orders. The NGT noted serious violations but showed leniency this time. However, the tribunal said, "in case of any future noncompliance, we may be constrained to order the prosecution" of these officials without further mercy. The NGT ordered strict enforcement of its directions. An Expert Committee will inspect mining leases at least three times each, and reports must be published on the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority website. District Magistrates and Police Commissioners have been told to conduct surprise checks on mining sites to stop illegal mining and transport. The NGT emphasized that ignoring its orders is an offence and would lead to legal action. This update comes after complaints of air and water pollution due to illegal mining in Kanpur and nearby areas.
