Mexico Warns US Tariffs on Cuban Oil Could Spark Humanitarian Crisis
January 31, 2026
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has warned that new US tariffs on countries sending oil to Cuba could cause a serious humanitarian crisis. Cuba is already facing chronic fuel shortages and daily blackouts. US President Donald Trump signed an order to impose tariffs, citing Cuba’s ties to Russia, Hamas, and Hezbollah. While the US did not name Mexico, Sheinbaum’s government has been the main oil supplier to Cuba since 2025, ahead of Russia and Venezuela. Sheinbaum said her government will ask the US State Department for details and explore ways to help Cuba without risking Mexico. "We will seek a way, without putting Mexico at risk, of course, but always seeking solidarity with the Cuban people," she said. Cuba is enduring 12-hour blackouts, making it hard for families to cook and affecting hospitals and food supplies. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel called Trump's action an attempt to "suffocate" the economy and revealed "the fascist, criminal, and genocidal nature" of the US government. Cuba’s oil reserves could last only 15 to 20 days, with sharp rationing expected soon. US officials have threatened stronger actions, including a blockade and military moves. These moves put Mexico in a tricky position as it tries to balance relations with the US and domestic politics. Energy expert Jorge Piñon warned, "If we do not see any crude oil or fuel deliveries within the next six to eight weeks, then the government will have a major crisis on their hands."
