AP Says Polavaram Water Diversion Won't Harm Upper States; CWC Reviews Krishna, Godavari Sharing
January 30, 2026
The Andhra Pradesh government stated that diverting 200 tmc ft of flood and surplus water from the Polavaram project will not harm upper riparian states. They urged the Central Water Commission (CWC) to provide clear guidelines on sharing Krishna and Godavari river waters. A key CWC meeting took place in New Delhi on Friday to review water-sharing issues between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The meeting was led by the CWC Chairman with officials and representatives from both states and river boards present.
Andhra Pradesh highlighted the Polavaram–Banakacherla Link Scheme and shared the status of its Preliminary Feasibility Report. Telangana opposed permissions for this link scheme, questioning how floodwaters could be used. Andhra Pradesh clarified the project will only divert surplus and floodwaters that would otherwise flow to the sea, and will happen after upper riparian states take their full legal share.
Andhra Pradesh also objected to Telangana's allocation of 968 tmc ft of Godavari waters, calling it unquantified under the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal award—a concern acknowledged by CWC. AP rejected Telangana’s demand to equally split Krishna river waters (50:50), calling it against tribunal awards and Apex Council decisions.
The CWC said Telangana's objections are under review. The CWC Chairman agreed that both states will send their main agenda points early for the next meeting.
