A couple in Indonesia has been caned 140 times for breaking Sharia law by having sex outside marriage and drinking alcohol. The woman, aged 21, fainted after receiving what authorities said was a record number of strokes during a public caning in Aceh province. Three female officers took turns striking her with a rattan cane while she cried. She collapsed and was carried off to an ambulance. The couple were punished on Thursday along with four others found guilty of violating Sharia. Among them was an Islamic police officer caned 23 times for being alone with a woman at her house. Aceh is the only Indonesian province that enforces Sharia law strictly, with sex outside marriage punishable by 100 strokes and alcohol consumption by 40 strokes. Rights groups criticize caning as cruel and say rules need improvement to support victims. Muhammad Rizal, head of Aceh's Islamic police, confirmed the officer in question would be dismissed. Public caning remains common in religiously conservative Aceh, drawing ongoing controversy.
