Donald Trump has issued a clear warning to Iran: stop its nuclear program and end the killing of protesters, or face the might of a massive US naval armada currently sailing to the Middle East. "Number one, no nuclear. And number two, stop killing protesters," Trump told reporters. "They are killing them by the thousands." He added, "We have a lot of very big, very powerful ships sailing to Iran right now, and it would be great if we didn’t have to use them."
The US president made these remarks during the premiere of the documentary Melania, as Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Turkey for talks. Araghchi will meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, but initial comments suggested no major breakthrough is expected.
Trump said he had been and would continue talking to Iranians, though it is unclear if this includes direct talks or communication through intermediaries. On Trump’s Truth Social, he warned, "Hopefully Iran will quickly ‘Come to the Table’ and negotiate a fair and equitable deal – NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS." He also declared, "a massive Armada is heading to Iran" ready to act "with speed and violence, if necessary."
From the US side, demands include ending Iran’s nuclear enrichment, removing highly enriched uranium, limiting missile programs, and stopping support for proxy groups in Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen, says Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff.
In contrast, Araghchi stated, "Iran has always welcomed a mutually beneficial, fair and equitable nuclear deal – on equal footing, and free from coercion, threats, and intimidation – which ensures Iran’s rights to peaceful nuclear technology, and guarantees no nuclear weapons." He stressed, "Such weapons have no place in our security calculations and we have NEVER sought to acquire them."
Araghchi is also holding talks with counterparts from Qatar, Egypt, UAE, Oman, and Turkey. These Arab states have made it clear their air and ground facilities cannot be used by the US to attack Iran.
At the same time, Araghchi criticized the EU’s recent decision to label Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a terrorist group. He said, "Europe is a declining continent... The decision they made was a major strategic mistake." Iran’s supreme leader's representative in the IRGC has warned that this move will have serious consequences for the EU.
With tensions high, the standoff over Iran's nuclear ambitions and regional actions continues to test global diplomacy.
