Choornikara Panchayat’s Aksharadeepam Books Delivered Doorstep by 50 Women Volunteers
January 30, 2026
Sunil Kumar KR, librarian of Choornikara Panchayat Library, leads 50 women volunteers from over 250 Kudumbashree units in delivering books to homes. This is the core of the Aksharadeepam project, launched in 2023. Books bought with ₹1.5 lakh from the Panchayat, and later donations, fuel the initiative. "They are my warriors!" says Sunil. Ages of women range from 23 to 68. Volunteers like Athikka Beevi KK, Sherbila MS, Sreeja Mani, Sheela Suresh, and Jalaja Sugunan proudly support the project despite no payment. They say, "Sunil sir needs our support to sustain this project and we are determined to ensure its longevity." The Panchayat has 21 wards, and this urban yet village-like area hosts the library above an anganwadi center. Around 1000 homes receive books monthly, delivered in numbered maroon cloth or jute bags. Each bag holds around 17 books, mostly Malayalam fiction by authors like Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai and OV Vijayan. Practical book size is key; smaller books encourage reading, explained by Sunil and volunteer Sreeja. A WhatsApp group helps coordinate activities. The project grew from 100 to 1000 homes, reaching 4000 people. Initially aimed only at Kudumbashree members, interest spread to others. Volunteers passed four selection levels and are chosen for passion, as this is voluntary work. Jalaja says, "We have wanted to read but did not have access to a library. This facility changes that." The library honors volunteers’ work with events and mementos. Speaker AN Shamseer recently commended the project at a celebration for reaching 700 homes. This heartfelt community effort lights the path to reading for many women and children in Choornikara Panchayat.
