On January 29, 2026, the Supreme Court of India put the University Grants Commission (UGC) Equity Regulations, 2026 on hold. These rules focused on caste-based discrimination, protecting Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes in higher education. However, they drew criticism for not covering upper castes or general category students. Reacting on January 30, a BJP spokesperson said, “The Supreme Court has put the UGC regulations in abeyance. The matter is subjudice, it will be inappropriate to comment on the issue.” The BJP also stated that “justice will be ensured to everyone.” The case remains under judicial review.
