India's Voter Turnout Stable, Women Participation Rises Over Last Decade: Lokniti-CSDS
January 30, 2026
India celebrated National Voters’ Day on January 25 to boost awareness and participation in elections. Data from Lokniti-CSDS reveal key trends in voter behaviour over the last decade. Voter turnout in general elections stayed steady: 66.44% in 2014, 67.40% in 2019, and 66.10% in 2024. Women’s turnout improved from 65.54% in 2014 to 67.18% in 2019, then held at 65.78% in 2024. This increase owes to better voter outreach and safer polling environments. According to the 2024 survey, 56% of voters believe their vote influences how the country is run, while 20% feel it does not. Women show the most interest in local politics, with almost half reporting moderate to high engagement. The data also highlight that most voters decide independently. In both 2014 and 2024 elections, about 59% of voters made their own choice without outside advice. Men tend to vote independently more than women, with scores of 66% and 52% respectively in 2024. Rural voters are just as independent as urban voters, sometimes even more so. These facts confirm strong faith in India's voting system and the growing political voice of women. Researchers Krishangi Sinha and Kirti Sharma of Lokniti-CSDS note these patterns show India’s democracy is mature, stable, and inclusive.
