Dubai RTA Introduces Permit System for Residential Parking Shades Amid Rising Summer Heat
January 29, 2026
As Dubai's summer heats soar to 45°C, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has set new rules for parking shades outside villas. These outdoor shades must now be installed with a formal "Parking Shade Installation Permit." The permit applies only to designated parking spots in residential neighborhoods. Villa owners or authorized representatives can apply online through the RTA website or "Dubai Drive" app. The structure's location must be clearly shown in a site plan, avoiding utility lines, telecom cables, and existing trees. The RTA demands strong, high-quality materials that fit neighborhood styles. No old fabrics or wooden planks allowed. Crucial for safety, the shade cannot block pedestrian paths or sidewalks, ensuring wheelchair and stroller users can pass freely. Its height must accommodate SUVs and service vehicles without obstructing drivers' sight near corners. The RTA inspects regularly and will issue notices or remove illegal or damaged shades at the owner's cost. These rules keep Dubai’s streets safe, neat, and comfortable despite the blazing heat. "Common Impact" is the government's goal—your cool car should not create trouble for your neighbors.
