The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Ahmedabad City Police, in partnership with Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), busted an inter-state child trafficking racket on January 28, 2026. A newborn baby was rescued and three people were arrested. The operation followed intelligence shared by Gujarat ATS with DCB Crime Branch. A police team led by Police Sub-Inspector J.C. Desai set a trap near Kotarpur Pumping Station, close to the Ahmedabad airport. They stopped a white Maruti Ertiga traveling from Himmatnagar towards the airport. Inside the vehicle, a newborn baby was found, prompting the arrest of three suspects. The arrested are identified as Vandanaben Jigarabhai Panchal (34) from Odhav, Ahmedabad, originally from Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh; Roshan aka Sajjan Mahavirprasad Agrawal (42) from Hyderabad, Telangana, originally from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan; and Sumit Bachchanbhai Yadav (27) from Vatva, Ahmedabad, originally from Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The vehicle driver, Maulik Umiyashankar Dave (32), remains under investigation. During questioning, the accused confessed they bought the newborn from a person named Munnu near Himmatnagar for ₹3.6 lakh. They were en route to Hyderabad to sell the baby to an agent named Nagraj. Police seized ₹10,050 cash, four mobile phones worth about ₹55,000, and the car used in the crime. A case has been registered against all accused under Sections 143(4), 137(2), 61(2)(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Sections 81 and 87 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. The newborn was handed over to a Child Health Officer for urgent medical care. Investigations continue to trace the larger trafficking network and catch remaining suspects.
