Delhi HC Seeks DGCA Reply on Putting Flight Duty Time Rules on Hold
January 28, 2026
The Delhi High Court on January 28, 2026, asked the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to give a response on a plea challenging the pause on revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules. These rules set resting times for pilots and crew to improve flight safety. A Division Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia told DGCA’s lawyer to get instructions by January 29. The court said, “.....These regulations have a direct nexus with safety measures for passengers.” The FDTL rules, made by DGCA in 2025, aim to limit pilots’ flying hours and reduce night landings, matching global fatigu-risk standards. But after many flight cancellations and operational problems by airlines like IndiGo in late 2025, the rules were put on hold. The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) said that these rules follow the International Civil Aviation Organization's safety standards. The PIL argued that keeping these rules in abeyance harms passenger safety and defeats their purpose.
