Three Brothers Die After Falling Through Frozen Pond in Texas
January 28, 2026
Three young brothers died after falling through ice on a private pond in Bonham, north Texas, on Monday. Their mother, Cheyenne Hangaman, tried to rescue them but could not hold on as the ice kept breaking. "There was three of them and only one of me... that's why I couldn't save them," she told CBS News. The boys, aged six, eight, and nine, were playing near the pond about 30 meters from the family home. The youngest was the first to fall while "ice skating" on the thin ice, and the older two jumped after him. Hangaman said, "When I seen them, they were struggling, and I know their bodies were already in shock. The water was freezing cold." She was rescued by a neighbor, who heard her screams and pulled her out with a horse rope. Emergency workers pulled the two older boys from the water first; the youngest was recovered after an extensive search. The local sheriff’s office did not release their names, but family identified them as Howard Doss, six, Kaleb Doss, eight, and EJ Doss, nine. Hangaman described her sons: EJ dreamed of being a football star, Kaleb loved to dance and sing, and Howard liked making people laugh. The boys’ school expressed grief and said counselors would support students and staff. This tragedy adds to the toll during a deadly winter storm that has killed over 20 people and left thousands without power across Texas and other US states.
