An avalanche hit the Sonamarg tourist resort in Jammu and Kashmir on the night of Tuesday, January 27, 2026. It struck at 10:12 p.m. in Ganderbal district, central Kashmir. Authorities caught the avalanche on CCTV, showing snow sweeping over buildings. Despite the massive snow slide, officials confirmed there was no loss of life. On Monday, January 26, officials had warned of a high-danger avalanche in the area. Over the past 24 hours, Sonamarg and other parts of Kashmir valley saw moderate to heavy snowfall. The timely warning and weather conditions highlight the region's vulnerability to such natural events.
