Shasta County authorities found a huge illegal weapons stash and a hidden underground bunker while searching for illegal marijuana. On January 20, Michael Jay Kamfolt, 40, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Officers found three AR-15-style rifles, a sawed-off shotgun, 13 firearms total, over 10,000 rounds of ammo, four body armour vests, and 30 high-capacity magazines. Two guns were stolen—one since 1978, another since 2016. Kamfolt, a known MAGA supporter and conservative activist, has raised concerns about voter fraud and attends local protests. He is close to Kevin Crye, a Shasta County supervisor and pro-Trump election denier. Crye, who survived a recall attempt in March 2024, expressed support for Kamfolt, saying, “It came to my attention today that a supporter, and I’ll even say a friend of mine, was arrested last night, and my heart is truly broken.” CHP Northern Division Chief John Pinoli said the amount of ammo showed an "imminent threat to public safety." The secret bunker found under Kamfolt’s Anderson property had power, ventilation, a concrete floor, drainage, and a large cavern with a gym, armchair, and TV. Officers also saw a Bennington flag, linked to the January 6 Capitol riot. Kamfolt faces charges including making a machine gun, building a ghost gun, possessing stolen firearms, and having armor-piercing ammo. He’s no longer in custody. The investigation is ongoing, and the case has been sent to the Shasta County District Attorney’s office for possible charges.
