Germany on Tuesday issued a travel warning to its citizens in the US due to a violent ICE crackdown in Minneapolis. The crackdown recently led to the death of Alex Preeti, a US citizen, marking the second shooting after Renee Good was killed earlier this month. Both victims were American citizens. The German Foreign Ministry advised, “In Minneapolis and other cities, demonstrations have sometimes led to violent clashes with immigration and security authorities. Stay informed via local media. Be vigilant and stay away from crowds where violence could potentially break out.” The ministry also said, “Remain calm and follow the instructions of the authorities and local security forces.” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz voiced concern over Alex Preeti’s fatal shooting. He said, “I find the news we've been getting from the USA in the last few days indeed worrying. And it's obviously always one region or one city that is affected.” Merz added, “I assume that the American authorities will now really clarify whether it was necessary to shoot here, whether there really was a threat to the officers involved. In any case, I have to say I find this level of use of violence in the USA worrying, to put it that way.” Journalist Olga Nesterova clarified that the alert is an official security notice, not a political statement. The update follows reports of Italian journalists Laura Cappon and Daniele Babbo being threatened by ICE agents in Minneapolis while reporting. The agents surrounded their car, with one warning, “We are going to break out your window and extract you from the vehicle.” Germany already has a travel advisory due to a severe winter storm affecting the US but added this warning about protests linked to Trump’s immigration crackdown. In March, Germany had updated its US travel advisory to note that holding a visa or waiver does not guarantee entry, after several German citizens were detained at the US border.
