Laryngectomy Survivors Create World Record Singing India's National Anthem on Republic Day
January 27, 2026
Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute in Hyderabad hosted a world record event on January 26, 2026. Laryngectomy survivors sang the Indian National Anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ on India’s 77th Republic Day. This unique recital was recognised by the World Book of Records, London.
The survivors used electrolarynx devices and tracheoesophageal voice prostheses. These tools helped them speak clearly after total laryngectomy, a surgery removing the voice box due to cancer. Their performance proved the success of voice rehabilitation.
Notable attendees included Nandamuri Balakrishna, chairman of the Nandamuri Basava Taraka Ramarao Memorial Cancer Foundation, and leading radiation oncologist Nori Dattatreyudu.
Laryngeal cancer affects many in India with rates varying across regions. Indian cancer data shows the disease accounts for 3 to 6% of all cancers in men and less than 1% in women. Global estimates place the rate at 4.55 cases per 100,000 men and 0.67 per 100,000 women in India.
The event highlighted the strength and courage of laryngectomy survivors, celebrating their voice and resilience through this historic National Anthem rendition.
