UK Has No Plans to Reintroduce Conscription Amid Rising Global Tensions
January 27, 2026
The UK government has clearly stated there are no plans to bring back conscription. However, global tensions and a shrinking army have brought the idea back into public talk. Conscription in Britain was used only twice in 126 years, during the world wars. But fears of new conflict rise with Russia's invasion of Ukraine and harsh warnings from Moscow. Sergey Karaganov, a Russian council member, warned that if Russia faces defeat, it might use nuclear weapons. The British Army is now much smaller, with about 73,000 soldiers, down from over 110,000 in 2010. While officials deny plans for conscription, experts say a longer war could strain forces. Historian David Swift told the Express refusal to serve would likely lead to fines, not jail, due to enforcement and prison limits. He noted countries like Greece fine refusal with about £5,200 and Switzerland charges extra tax instead. Historically, Britain exempted people doing important civilian work, a rule likely to return. Unemployed graduates might be targeted for service, and some could be 'conscripted' for defense industry jobs. Moral objection was recognized before, with objectors doing non-combat roles or facing jail if refusing all war work. A recent YouGov poll shows 38% of under-40s would refuse conscription in a future war, vs 28% willing. Meanwhile, European neighbors prepare citizens for conflict emergencies. UK authorities warn of cyberattacks from Russia. Military chiefs like Sir Richard Knighton say conscription won't return soon but warn global situations could worsen. For now, conscription is an idea, but its return reflects how tense the world has become.
