Gunmen Kill 11 at Football Match in Central Mexico’s Salamanca
January 26, 2026
Gunmen opened fire at a football match in Salamanca, a town in central Mexico’s Guanajuato state, on Sunday. At least 11 people were killed and 12 injured, officials said. César Prieto, Salamanca’s mayor, said the gunmen struck at the end of the match. Ten victims died at the scene, while one died later in hospital. Among the wounded are a woman and a child. The mayor called the attack part of a “crime wave” and asked Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for help to control the violence. The state prosecutor’s office is investigating and working with federal forces to boost security. Guanajuato had the highest number of homicides in Mexico last year. A local gang, Santa Rosa de Lima, is fighting the Jalisco New Generation Cartel in the region. Mayor Prieto said, “Unfortunately, there are criminal groups trying to subjugate authorities, something they are not going to achieve.” Mexico’s government reported that the murder rate in 2025 was the lowest since 2016, at 17.5 murders per 100,000 people, but some analysts doubt these numbers fully show the extent of violence in the country.
