Boeing Sees Bright Future for Dreamliners in India Despite Tariff Hurdles
January 26, 2026
US aircraft maker Boeing is optimistic about more demand for its Dreamliners in India. Salil Gupte, Boeing India and South Asia President, said the Indian market is ready for strong growth. "B787 has an extremely bright future in India... we look forward to potentially more orders for the 787 in India coming," Gupte told PTI.
Air India operates 33 Dreamliners, including 26 B787-8s and six B787-9s from Vistara. IndiGo also leases Dreamliners from Norse Atlantic Airways. The new Dreamliner from Air India post-privatization will begin commercial flights from February 1.
Last June, an Air India Dreamliner crashed after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing 260 people. This was the first fatal accident involving the Dreamliner. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is probing the crash. Gupte said, "As it relates to the accident investigation, of course, that will go on... but beyond that, there's not much that any of the OEMs can comment on."
Despite tariff tensions between India and the US, Boeing is confident. "Whether it is a tariff or a financial crisis or something else, in the long term, it does not affect the growth of the business... We are confident that we will be able to see some of these short-term challenges through," Gupte added.
Boeing has more than 265 commercial and military planes in India and works with 325 suppliers here, sourcing over $1.25 billion yearly. Airlines like Air India Express, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet also use Boeing planes.
On competition from Airbus, Gupte said, "Competition is natural in the industry... We believe that the number of routes and missions that our customers here will want to fly will grow for the B787."
Last year, Boeing delivered 14 Dreamliners worldwide. The global demand for B787 planes remains strong and is expected to continue rising.
