NRA Demands Full Probe into Alex Pretti Shooting, Pushes Back Against Trump Officials
January 26, 2026
The National Rifle Association (NRA) and other US gun rights groups have called on the Trump administration for a full investigation into the killing of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. Pretti, a registered nurse at a Veterans Affairs hospital, was fatally shot by a border agent on Saturday. State and federal officials gave different accounts of the event. The Trump administration said Pretti carried a gun and posed a danger. However, no video has shown him holding a gun.
The NRA called a federal prosecutor's comment that gun carriers risk being lawfully shot "dangerous and wrong." The NRA said, "Responsible public voices should be awaiting a full investigation, not making generalisations and demonising law-abiding citizens."
First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli posted on social media, "If you approach law enforcement with a gun, there is a high likelihood they will be legally justified in shooting you. Don't do it!" The NRA responded, promising a "robust and comprehensive investigation" and urged political voices to lower tensions "to ensure their constituents and law enforcement officers stay safe."
Other gun advocates and politicians, like Gun Owners of America and Republican Thomas Massie, criticized Essayli’s comments. Essayli later clarified, saying he did not support shooting law-abiding gun carriers but referred to agitators refusing to disarm.
This shooting is the second federal agent-involved fatality in Minneapolis this month linked to an ICE crackdown on illegal immigration. Videos captured the moments before the shooting. Officials' stories contradict each other. The Department of Homeland Security displayed a gun it said belonged to Pretti and described him as a threat.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the agents, saying they fired "defensive shots" to protect lives. She added, "I don't know of any peaceful protester that shows up with a gun and ammunition rather than a sign."
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the Trump administration’s account "nonsense" and "lies." Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey compared the federal action to an invasion and accused ICE of trying to "spin this as an action of self-defence."
