Minnesota Protesters Boycott Target, Using Salt Return Tactic to Protest ICE
January 25, 2026
A video on social media shows Minnesota protesters lining up to buy salt at Target stores, then returning it repeatedly. This tactic is meant to hold up the store lines as a protest against ICE. The group SURJ-TC (Showing Up for Racial Justice Twin Cities) shared that they plan to repeat this protest at five Target stores until the company speaks against ICE. On the same day, about 100 SURJ-TC and Unidos supporters held a sit-in at a downtown Minneapolis Target. Calls for a Target boycott have grown recently. On January 8, after an ICE agent shot and killed Minneapolis resident Renee Good, ICE agents detained two Target workers in Richfield, Minnesota. Target has faced boycotts before. In 2016, conservatives protested a Target policy allowing transgender customers to use restrooms matching their gender identity. In 2023, Target was criticized by conservatives for Pride Month products, leading to fewer stores selling them and pushback from LGBTQ+ advocates. Organizers say previous boycotts inspire their current efforts. Black pastor Rev Jamal Bryant started a “Target fast” boycott lasting 40 days to push the company to restore commitments. "We know that from a historical perspective, nonviolent activism and civic pressure always wins," said Ulla Nilsen, Unidos lead organizer. She added, "We have an administration that’s making everyone afraid. So we are calling on the CEO of Target and other businesses in Minnesota to stop being afraid because when we stand together, we will get through this."
