Trump Calls Minnesota Shooting a 'Cover-Up' Amid ICE Controversy
January 25, 2026
US President Donald Trump reacted sharply to the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. Trump called the incident a “cover-up” and criticized Minnesota’s Democratic leaders in a series of posts on Truth Social. Pretti, a US citizen with a legal gun permit, was shot after approaching agents armed. "This is the gunman’s gun, loaded (with two additional full magazines!), and ready to go – What is that all about? Where are the local Police? Why weren’t they allowed to protect ICE Officers?" Trump asked. He claimed local police were “called off” and federal officers had to defend themselves. Trump also accused state officials of corruption, asking, “Why does Ilhan Omar have $34 Million Dollars in her account? And where are the Tens of Billions of Dollars that have been stolen from the once Great State of Minnesota?” He said federal officers are in Minnesota to tackle "massive Monetary Fraud" and fight "Illegal Criminals" enabled by Democrats’ open borders. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin confirmed federal agents fired “defensive shots” after Pretti “violently resisted” disarmament. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated Pretti was legally carrying a weapon. Somali-American Congresswoman Ilhan Omar called the killing “an execution by immigration enforcement.” She and others like Zohran Mamdani and AOC said the Trump administration is using force to intimidate. The shooting happened during ongoing protests over a recent ICE killing of Renee Good. Governor Tim Walz confirmed the shooting, while Vice President JD Vance said federal agents are doing their jobs but are being blocked by state leaders. Protesters gathered at the scene chanting “ICE out now.”
