FBI Agent Resigns Amid Pressure Over ICE Officer’s Fatal Shooting Probe
January 24, 2026
Tracee Mergen, a supervisory FBI agent, has resigned after facing pressure to stop her civil rights investigation into ICE officer Jonathan Ross. Ross fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis during an ICE operation. Federal officials claim the officer acted in self-defense, saying Good tried to run him over. But eyewitnesses and video footage dispute this, showing Good attempting to drive away when shot.
Mergen had begun working with Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to investigate. Soon after, she was told to reclassify the case to focus on alleged assault by Good against Ross. The FBI also blocked the BCA from investigating further.
The case has caused turmoil in the US justice system. Last week, six federal prosecutors resigned. One, Assistant US Attorney Joe Thompson, left after pressure to shift the probe toward Good’s widow instead of the officer.
Protests erupted nationwide after Good’s shooting, with clashes between authorities and demonstrators.
Sources tell CNN that Mergen's resignation is part of a larger FBI shake-up led by Director Kash Patel. This push aims to remove agents connected to previous investigations into former President Donald Trump. The changes affect senior officials in several cities and have triggered legal challenges from former FBI leaders.
