Major Airlines Cancel Middle East Flights Amid Rising US-Iran Tensions
January 24, 2026
A fresh wave of flight cancellations has hit the Middle East. Major airlines like Air France, KLM, and Lufthansa stopped flights to Israel and Gulf countries due to rising US-Iran tensions. Many suspensions last through the weekend, leaving thousands stranded and disrupting air travel. KLM cancelled all overnight flights to Israel and the Gulf through Sunday. Lufthansa limited flights to Israel to daytime and avoided Iranian and Iraqi airspace. US carriers United Airlines and Air Canada also scrapped Tel Aviv flights for Friday and Saturday.
Last week, Iran closed its airspace for five hours amid fears of US military action, forcing flight reroutes and cancellations. Aviation groups warn missile and drone threats could endanger civilian flights.
The US is sending more military forces to the region. President Trump said a massive "armada" is heading toward Iran, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. He called the deployment precautionary but warned, "maybe we won’t have to use it."
Additional US jets and troops have arrived, while the UK sent fighter jets to Qatar. This buildup comes amid large protests in Iran. Rights groups report thousands of deaths during the crackdown, with numbers ranging from 3,117 to over 5,000. The real toll may be higher due to internet shutdowns. Iran denies claims that US pressure stopped executions of protesters.
The situation keeps tensions high and travel disrupted across the volatile region.
