Russia Deploys New High-Speed Geran-5 Drones Against Ukraine Using Western, Chinese Parts
January 23, 2026
Russia has started using a new fast drone called the Geran-5 against Ukraine. Ukrainian military intelligence say the drone includes important parts from Western and Chinese firms. The Geran-5, powered by a Chinese turbojet engine, has a sleek body with wings, unlike earlier Geran models based on Iranian designs. Experts estimate its top speed at 600 km/h, much faster than older versions. This makes it harder for Ukraine's mobile air defence teams, who use pickup trucks with guns, to shoot them down. Two of these drones were shot down earlier this year near Kyiv and Dnipro. The Geran-5 can fly nearly 1,000 km carrying a 90 kg payload. There are reports Russia might soon launch them mid-air from jets to increase range. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia could be making around 500 drones daily, much higher than last year's 170 daily drones. He also noted Russia has many Iranian drones and ballistic missiles. Ukrainian officials are worried the Geran-5 has parts from Germany, China, and even US-made microchips. A report by the Institute for Science and International Security says Moscow is focusing on better drone technology rather than firing more. Some drones now have cameras and radio modems for better control. Also, new Geran-2 drones with portable anti-air missiles are in use to fight back against Ukraine’s planes. These improvements show Russia is raising the stakes in drone warfare against Ukraine.
