Kansas City Man Faces 14 Felonies in Viral Facebook Marketplace Car Scam
January 23, 2026
A Kansas City man, Mamadou Diallo, faces major charges after prosecutors say he ran a car scam on Facebook Marketplace. Diallo sold vehicles to multiple buyers using fake paperwork. Buyers paid thousands but lost both car and money when the vehicles vanished from their homes within a day. Police say Diallo used forged documents making the sales seem real. Victims believed they bought legal cars, only to have them reported stolen hours later. The same two cars – a 2013 grey Honda Civic and a 2013 brown Buick Verano – appeared repeatedly in sales. In one case, a car was stolen back in just seven hours, caught on CCTV. Diallo now faces 14 felony counts, including first-degree motor vehicle tampering and forgery. If convicted, he could get up to 98 years in prison. The crimes happened in May and June 2025 and were matched by police through similar listings and paperwork. The charges came out in January 2026. Online, the story went viral on X, getting millions of views. Many called it an "infinite money glitch" and compared it to Wall Street scams. Some questioned if the lengthy sentence fits this non-violent crime. Experts warn buyers to be careful when buying cars online: check VINs, meet in safe places, verify IDs, and avoid rushed deals. This case serves as a strong warning about the risks of peer-to-peer sales on platforms like Facebook Marketplace.
