French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday that the French Navy boarded and searched a Russian oil tanker in the Mediterranean Sea. Macron said the tanker was "subject to international sanctions" and "suspected of flying a false flag." The operation happened on the high seas with support from several allies. Macron declared, "We will not tolerate any violation." He explained the boarding was done in full compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. A judicial investigation has been launched, and the vessel has been redirected. Macron emphasized the importance of enforcing sanctions, noting, "The activities of the “shadow fleet” contribute to financing the war of aggression against Ukraine." Earlier in June, the US also seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker called Bella-1 for breaching sanctions and intercepted another vessel, the M/T Sophia, for illegal actions in international waters.
