January 22, 2026
Twelve sailors were saved from a sinking Bangladeshi cargo vessel in the Muri Ganga river in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The incident happened on January 21, 2026. The vessel, MV Tamjid from Khulna, was carrying fly ash from Budge Budge. "While crossing the Muri Ganga, the ship reportedly hit an underwater sandbar, causing a rupture in its midsection. Water began gushing into the vessel, trapping the crew on board," said a senior police officer. Local fishermen saw the struggling vessel and quickly alerted the Sagar police station. A joint rescue operation by fishermen and police rescued all 12 sailors safely. Eleven of them are Bangladeshi nationals. "None was injured," the officer confirmed. Authorities are investigating if foggy conditions or mechanical problems caused the accident.
