Ukrainian Drone Strike Hits Russian Oil Terminal, Kills 3 in Krasnodar Krai
January 22, 2026
An oil terminal near the village of Volna in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai was hit late Wednesday by Ukrainian drones, causing a major fire that killed at least three people and injured several, Russian authorities said. Krasnodar governor Veniamin Kondratyev said the strike set fire to four oil product tanks. Emergency services deployed 208 personnel and 51 pieces of equipment to fight the blaze, which was extinguished by Thursday morning. Volna and nearby Taman lie on the Taman Peninsula in southern Russia, across the Kerch Strait from Crimea. The area is about 325 km from Ukrainian-controlled Nikopol. Kondratyev added this was the second night in a row of attacks on Krasnodar Krai. Earlier on January 21, an overnight strike in Russia’s Republic of Adygea killed one person and injured 11 others. Another drone attack that night sparked a fire at the Afipsky oil refinery in Krasnodar Krai, one of southern Russia’s largest refineries. The Afipsky refinery has been a repeated target of drone strikes, including in September and November last year. According to the Kyiv Independent, Ukraine views Russian energy infrastructure as valid military targets because oil and fuel money supports Moscow’s war. Ukraine has increased long-range strikes inside Russia to reduce its military strength. Attacks on Russian ports, tankers, and offshore energy platforms have grown, while Russia continues to hit energy and civilian targets in Ukraine, including several strikes on the Black Sea port of Odesa.
