Durham School Dubai Mourns Beloved Year 4 Teacher Sebastian Charles After Fatal Accident
January 22, 2026
A Year 4 teacher at Durham School Dubai, Sebastian Charles, has died in a road accident over the weekend. Principal Kieran McLaughlin shared the sad news with parents. Charles joined the school recently and quickly won the hearts of students and staff. He was known for his caring nature and dedication.
Principal McLaughlin said, "such moments are particularly hard because schools symbolise future aspirations, and losing a respected member of staff affects everyone deeply." To help students cope, the school has arranged a grief counsellor for pupils who need support. Parents were asked to contact class teachers if their children need extra help. The principal also urged families to talk openly about the tragedy, noting that "every child may react differently".
Sebastian Charles was more than a teacher. The principal described him as a "steady presence" with a warm personality and strong character. He made Year 4 lessons engaging and was a popular figure around the school, known for his welcoming smile and positive energy.
Due to the loss, the school postponed its planned sports day for EYFS and Key Stage 1 to next week. Principal McLaughlin asked the community to honour Charles respectfully and avoid speculation, especially on social media. He promised the school will eventually hold a formal service to remember Mr Charles.
In a city like Dubai, where many are expats, teachers often become a "second family" to children. The school and wider community feel this loss deeply. The outpouring of love from parents and colleagues across the UAE shows that it is the heart one brings to their role that truly matters.
