At Least 43 Dead in Southern Spain High-Speed Train Crash, Families Demand Answers
January 21, 2026
A deadly collision between two high-speed trains in southern Spain has claimed at least 43 lives. The crash happened 36 miles from Córdoba on a straight section of track, which may hold clues to the cause. Eduardo Morán, a doctor from Córdoba's Reina Sofía Hospital, rushed to the scene and described preparing multiple hospital units for an influx of injured patients. Injuries ranged from minor wounds to missing limbs. "We were expecting more," Morán said, noting some victims died at the site. Meanwhile, families of the missing gathered in Córdoba, giving DNA samples to help identify loved ones. One victim, María del Carmen Abril, died after a birthday party and was remembered fondly by friends, who struggle with the shock. Another victim, Victor Luis Terán, was confirmed dead after being caught in the crash due to a last-minute train change. The incident is Spain's worst rail disaster in over a decade and follows a recent derailment near Barcelona, causing unions to call a strike over worsening rail safety. The official investigation is ongoing. Families and officials have been asked to exercise patience as answers will take weeks to uncover.
