BBC Leaks Faces of 326 Killed in Iran’s Brutal Protest Crackdown
January 21, 2026
Hundreds of photos showing the faces of people killed during Iran's violent crackdown on anti-government protests have been leaked to BBC Verify. The graphic images reveal at least 326 victims, including 18 women, with many faces bloodied and bruised. These photos were displayed in a south Tehran mortuary to help families identify their dead loved ones.
Many victims were badly injured and unrecognizable. About 69 bodies were labeled as John or Jane Doe, indicating unknown identities. Only 28 victims had clear name labels. More than 100 people died on January 9, one of the deadliest nights for Tehran's protesters. On that night, protesters clashed with security forces, set streets on fire, and chanted slogans against Iran's supreme leader.
The protests began after Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran's late shah, called for nationwide demonstrations. The leaked photos show a glimpse of thousands killed during the crackdown. BBC Verify tracked protests since late December but also revealed authorities imposed a near total internet blackout. This has made documenting violence and death tolls very difficult.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei admitted thousands were killed but blamed outsiders like the US and Israel. Despite the blackout, some images and videos emerged from the Kahrizak Forensic Medical Centre mortuary. A source described seeing victims aged from as young as 12 to 70 years old, with devastating injuries.
Families gathered inside the mortuary, watching slideshows of photos to identify loved ones. Injuries were sometimes so severe people struggled to recognize the dead. Some had breathing tubes, indicating they died after medical care. Personal items like bank cards were sometimes the only ID.
BBC Verify also confirmed distressing videos from the mortuary showing violence, including victims with gunshot wounds. Efforts to share victims’ names continue via limited internet access through Starlink or neighboring countries. Human Rights Activists News Agency estimates over 4,000 killed since protests began. The death toll and brutality remain largely hidden due to the strict internet shutdown.
