January 21, 2026
Motorists in Indian cities are stuck in severe traffic jams, losing up to a week every year, says the 2025 traffic report by TomTom, a Netherlands-based location tech firm. Bengaluru is the second most congested city worldwide with an average speed of 16.6 km/h. Commuters spend about 15 minutes to cover just 4.2 km. Mexico tops the global congestion chart.
Pune ranks fifth globally and is the second Indian city in the top 10 congestion list. Mumbai improved slightly, cutting congestion by 3.3 percentage points since 2024, but commuters still lose 126 hours annually, with speeds around 20.8 km/h. New Delhi saw congestion rise by 3.5 points, with motorists losing 104 hours yearly.
Among Asia’s top 10 congested cities, six are in India: Bengaluru (1), Pune (2), Mumbai (6), New Delhi (7), Kolkata (9), and Jaipur (10). Chennai ranks 11th and Hyderabad 15th in Asia. Hyderabad’s congestion fell by 1.3 points, a rare improvement.
TomTom’s Traffic Index uses anonymous GPS and real driving speed data from trips totaling over 3.65 trillion kilometers worldwide. It ranks cities based on congestion, travel time, and speed.
In Bengaluru, the average time to travel 10 km rose from 34 minutes 10 seconds in 2024 to 36 minutes 9 seconds in 2025. Drivers wasted 168 hours in traffic in 2025, equal to seven days and 40 minutes. Mumbai ranks 18th globally, Delhi 23rd, and Kolkata dropped from 2nd in 2024 to 29th in 2025 but still with 150 hours lost yearly. Chennai is 32nd, Hyderabad is 47th globally.
The report highlights the grinding traffic problems plaguing Indian metros. Bengaluru’s congestion rose by 1.7 percentage points, Chennai by 1%, while Hyderabad’s dropped.
