Chennai’s India Tourism & Industrial Fair Turns 50, Celebrates Legacy and Joy
January 21, 2026
The India Tourism and Industrial Fair, held at Island Grounds in Chennai, recently marked its 50th anniversary. It began in 1974 as the Pongal Tourist Trade Fair, later renamed by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in 1989. The fair is a major event that brings families together with shopping, food, rides, and cultural exhibits. Residents fondly recall walking on soft sand with the sea breeze, enjoying big pappads and chilli bajjis.
The fair originally had around 200 stalls including government departments and featured themes like '350 years of Madras.' It combined shopping with entertainment such as horticulture and dog shows, book exhibitions, and food fairs involving star hotels. In 1982, the fair awarded a Chettinad special dish, Kothamalli Kashayam, for being the best nutritious food at a low cost.
The Island Grounds was once Defence Ministry land but was transferred to the Tamil Nadu government in the 1980s. Key figures like late Minister R.M. Veerappan played roles in managing the fair. The event has evolved from state-run organisation to a profit-sharing private contract.
The fair has faced challenges, including a major fire in 1982 that destroyed several pavilions. Despite this, it remains a lively venue showcasing Tamil Nadu's culture, tourism, education, and products like brass items and sarees.
Today, the fair hosts 43 stalls from government departments and features attractions like a giant wheel and 3D shows for children. Special buses run to the venue, keeping this tradition alive for new generations.
