Australia Passes Strong Hate Laws After Bondi Attack; Experts Warn on NDIS Assessment Tool
January 21, 2026
Australia’s parliament has passed the strongest hate speech laws in its history, aimed at fighting hate and controlling gun access, following the deadly Bondi beach attack. Foreign Minister Penny Wong told RN Breakfast the laws will tackle hate spread and gun access despite changes for Coalition backing. She said, “Freedom of expression is important in our country, but with the rise of antisemitism and in the wake of the worst terrorist attack that this country has seen on Australian soil, we really do need to continue to strengthen our response to hate.”
Greens’ justice spokesperson David Shoebridge opposed the law, calling the rushed bill "reckless" and a "betrayal of basic sense of democracy." Nationals leader David Littleproud also opposed the laws, criticizing them as an "over-reach."
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said Jewish Australians will be safer. He said the laws give "more tools to effectively combat antisemitism" but admitted they are not as tough as hoped. Burke noted, "We have to deal with the parliament that we have."
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Scott Morrison clashed with current PM Anthony Albanese over when antisemitism began rising, with Morrison defending his government’s record.
On another front, experts including the Australian Psychological Society president Dr. Kelly Gough warned that the National Disability Insurance Scheme’s (NDIS) new assessment tool, called I-CAN, has not been tested across diverse disabilities. They fear this might lead to "terrible outcomes" or even "tragedies" if used widely without more research.
Attorney General Michelle Rowland confirmed the government will not pursue racial vilification laws removed from the hate speech bill to secure Senate support. She said bipartisan agreement is necessary for any future laws on this issue.
