Calcutta High Court orders BSF deployment to maintain peace in Murshidabad after Beldanga violence
January 20, 2026
The Calcutta High Court has stepped in to control repeated violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. On January 20, 2026, the court ordered police and state officials to maintain peace in the troubled Beldanga area. This follows two Public Interest Litigations filed last week – one by West Bengal Assembly Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari and another by a Beldanga local resident. Mr. Adhikari welcomed the court’s move. He said, "In an application filed by me in connection with the Beldanga riots, the Hon’ble Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and the Hon’ble Justice Partha Sarathi Sen have directed today the deployment of five companies of the Border Security Force as available in Beldanga, and full utilisation thereof by the State." These five BSF companies are part of the Central forces already present since communal riots in early 2025. The court also told the Murshidabad Superintendent of Police and District Magistrate to take strong actions to stop further violence. Mr. Adhikari had asked for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe, but the court said it will decide on this after examining a State government report. The violence in Beldanga erupted on January 16 after the death of a migrant worker from the area in Jharkhand. Protesters blocked railway tracks and a national highway for hours. At least 12 people were hurt, and about 30 arrested for inciting unrest. Media persons also faced attacks during the clashes. Leaders from Trinamool Congress and BJP blamed each other for the violence. BJP called it communal in nature, while TMC accused some Opposition groups of stirring trouble. The court’s clear direction aims to restore calm and prevent more clashes in the sensitive border district.
