Violence in Assam's Kokrajhar: One Dead, RAF Deployed, Internet Suspended
January 20, 2026
Clashes broke out on January 20, 2026, between Bodo and tribal communities in Kokrajhar district, Assam. The violence followed a mob attack after a vehicle carrying three Bodos hit two tribals at Mansingh Road near Karigaon. The tribal villagers beat the Bodos and torched their vehicle, resulting in one death.
The next day, both groups blocked the National Highway, burned tires and some houses, set fire to a government office, and attacked the Karigaon police outpost. To control the situation, the Rapid Action Force (RAF) was deployed.
Officials also suspended all Internet and mobile data services in the entire district to stop the spread of inflammatory messages and rumors. However, voice calls and broadband via fixed lines remain functional.
A Home Department official said, "Apprehending that social media and Internet may be used to further spread inflammatory messages and rumours, the Home Department has suspended Internet/mobile data service of all mobile service providers temporarily in the entire district until further orders."
