Gujarat Govt Launches AI Drive to Track Stray Cattle in Ahmedabad Using CCTV
January 20, 2026
The Gujarat government is using artificial intelligence (AI) and CCTV cameras to identify stray cattle in Ahmedabad. A pilot project is being prepared that will use AI to spot stray cows and find their owners in real time through CCTV footage. This follows the creation of the Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The Centre works to bring advanced technology into city governance. Stray cattle cause traffic problems and accidents often in Ahmedabad. Currently, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) teams use CCTV images and then manually check cattle using microchips and RFID tags, a slow and tiring process. To speed this up, a private agency is developing a deep-learning AI model. This AI will analyze images from CCTV cameras at about 130 city junctions, identifying cows by their unique nose patterns, similar to human fingerprints, along with facial and eye details. About 1.10 lakh cows in Ahmedabad carry RFID tags, with owner details stored by AMC. Once ready, the AI system will help find stray cattle and alert their owners quickly. Officials expect this technology to reduce identification time, improve traffic flow, lower cattle-related accidents, and provide a data-backed way to monitor stray cattle. This project fits into Gujarat’s larger plan to use smart technology for better urban development.
