Ghana Arrests Nine Nigerians Running Cyber-Crime Networks in Accra
January 19, 2026
Ghana's security forces have arrested nine Nigerians suspected of running cyber-crime networks from offices around Accra, the capital city. In addition, 44 other individuals, believed to be victims brought to Ghana from Nigeria under false promises of work, were detained and handed over to immigration officials. During a two-day intelligence-led raid, authorities seized 62 laptops, 52 mobile phones, and two pump-action guns.
Many foreigners are reportedly tricked into coming to Ghana with promises of jobs. Once there, they are confined in gated compounds, have their documents taken, and are forced into cyber-crime activities. These criminals often run romance scams, convincing victims to send money to fake partners, or business email compromise scams, where they impersonate employers to steal funds or data.
The operation was coordinated by several agencies, including Ghana's Cyber Security Authority (CSA). Communications Minister Sam George said on X, "All the arrested individuals have been duly profiled and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for safekeeping and further investigations." He warned foreign nationals to "verify claims made by their fellow nationals to lure them here."
George also noted that suspects from earlier raids are either in Nigerian custody or facing charges in Ghana. Ghanaian authorities have also cooperated with US agencies to arrest major cyber-crime figures. Recently, social media influencer Frederick Kumi, known as Abu Trica, was arrested for allegedly stealing $8 million from Americans via romance scams. Another syndicate caught defrauded over 200 victims of $400,000.
