Grain Discolouration in Keezhaiyur Paddy Sparks Farmer Worries, Officials Say Yield Safe
January 19, 2026
Farmers in parts of Keezhaiyur block have reported black grains in their samba paddy crops during harvest. This issue has affected several acres, though the full extent is still unknown. Paddy varieties CO-51 and ADT-46, grown through direct seeding in villages like Thirupoondi, Kameswaram, Vettaikaraniruppu, and Vizhunthamavadi, showed blackened grains when mature. V. Manivannan from Keezhaiyur Kadaimadai Pasana Vivasayigal Sangam said farmers invest ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 per acre for cultivation, and they are anxious because the crop faced many challenges during the heavy northeast monsoon rains. He added, "After safeguarding the crop through continuous rains and adverse weather, this problem at the final stage has caused anxiety." Scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sikkal, inspected the fields and noted the black grain is a result of recent cold and foggy weather. P. Aravindhan, Joint Director of Agriculture, said, "It has been noticed only in limited areas and is unlikely to affect yield." The Agriculture Department advised that grain filling will not be affected and urged farmers not to panic. They recommended timely crop protection if pests or diseases become a problem.
