January 19, 2026
The United States will mark Martin Luther King Jr Day on Monday, January 19, 2026. This federal holiday honors the civil rights leader’s legacy. Many government offices, banks, and financial markets will close. Major banks including Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, Wells Fargo, PNC, and US Bank will shut their branches. Teller services, loan processing, and notary assistance will not be available. Customers can still use ATMs and online banking apps. Transactions done on the holiday will process the next business day.
Postal services will pause completely. The US Postal Service will close all post offices and stop mail delivery on January 19. Operations resume Tuesday, January 20. Private delivery services will vary: UPS will suspend pickup and delivery, and many UPS Store locations will close. FedEx will run some services and keep many FedEx Office locations open, but hours may differ.
Financial markets including the NYSE and Nasdaq will be closed. Bond and over-the-counter trading will also pause. All federal, state, and local government offices will close, such as Social Security and Motor Vehicle departments. Online services may still be accessible despite physical closures.
Many public schools, libraries, and non-essential government offices will close as well. Trash collection and other municipal services could be delayed. Public transport may run on a holiday or modified schedule; for example, Houston Metro buses and trains will operate normally.
Retail stores, grocery shops, and restaurants are mostly expected to stay open. Some will offer sales to attract holiday shoppers. Martin Luther King Jr Day is also a time for community service and remembrance. Across the country, people join parades, service projects, and educational events to celebrate Dr King’s impact on civil rights and nonviolent protest.
