Three Shark Attacks in Sydney Within 24 Hours Leave Two Seriously Injured
January 19, 2026
Sydney has seen three shark attacks in just over 24 hours, leading to two serious injuries. On Sunday, a 12-year-old boy was critically injured by a large shark while swimming at Shark Beach in Vaucluse. The boy was jumping off a six-metre rock ledge with friends when the attack happened. His friends quickly pulled him from the water and helped stop the bleeding. Joseph McNulty, head of New South Wales' marine area command, praised their actions: "The actions of his mates... have been nothing but brave. [It was] a gallant recovery." The boy is now in intensive care. Authorities believe a bull shark is responsible, attracted by recent heavy rains and brackish water.
Earlier on Monday, an 11-year-old surfer at Dee Why Beach was shaken after a shark bit his surfboard. Local council officials urged caution for swimmers and surfers.
The latest attack happened Monday evening at Manly's North Steyne Beach, where a man suffered serious leg injuries. Emergency services rushed him to hospital, and police closed all nearby beaches until further notice.
Australia is known for its beautiful beaches but also for deadly shark attacks. Last year alone, the country recorded at least five fatal attacks. The recent incidents in Sydney highlight the ongoing risks and the need for vigilance along the coast.
