Leopard Kills Pet Dog in Kasaragod, Kerala, Sparking Fear Among Residents
January 19, 2026
In the early hours of Monday, a leopard killed a one-year-old pet dog in Iriyanni, Payyam, Kasaragod district, Kerala. The dog, owned by Santhosh, was tied outside the house at the time of the attack. The family found the dog's carcass on Monday morning. Forest officials have launched an inquiry. According to the Forest department, measures like setting traps are being considered to track the leopard.
This is not the first incident in the area. A few months ago, two dogs owned by Santhosh’s uncle, Kunhikannan Maniyani, were also attacked by a leopard. Local residents report frequent leopard sightings in Iriyanni, Payyam, Kuniyeri, and Bebba areas. About two weeks ago, CCTV footage from Bellatte, Kuniyeri, captured a leopard chasing and carrying away a dog from a house. The rising incidents have triggered growing fear among villagers.
