January 19, 2026
A huge explosion rocked the Baogang United Steel plant in Inner Mongolia, northern China, on Sunday around 3 PM local time. The blast caused tremors felt in the area. Two people died and 84 were injured. Five people are still missing, state media said. Witnesses shared videos showing large smoke clouds rising and debris like collapsed ceilings and pipes strewn on the ground. Five of the injured are in serious condition. Officials are investigating what caused the blast. Baogang United Steel is a major state-owned company. China has seen many industrial accidents over the years, including deadly factory explosions and mine collapses. In 2015, two massive blasts in Tianjin port killed 173 and caused huge damage. Last May, a chemical plant explosion in Shandong province killed five and injured 19, blowing out windows nearby. This latest accident adds to the country's long history of industrial mishaps.
