January 19, 2026
Two high-speed trains derailed near Adamuz in Córdoba province, southern Spain. Police confirmed that 10 people died in the accident. About 100 people were injured, with 25 seriously hurt, according to Spain’s state broadcaster RTVE. The accident took place shortly after 6:40 pm when the Iryo 6189 train traveling from Málaga to Madrid left the tracks and crashed onto the neighboring track. Another train running from Madrid to Huelva on that track also derailed. Adif, the rail network operator, said the crash happened 10 minutes after the train left Málaga. Iryo, an Italian-run private rail company, did not respond immediately for comments. All rail traffic between Madrid and Andalucía has been stopped by Adif. Andalucía emergency services confirmed that at least nine ambulances and support vehicles were sent to help. RTVE journalist Salvador Jiménez, who was on board a train from Córdoba to Madrid, shared images showing one of the train's rear carriages lying on its side, with evacuated passengers sitting alongside it. The cause of the derailment is being investigated.
