Fire at Karachi Shopping Mall Gul Plaza Kills Six, Injures Over 20
January 18, 2026
A fire broke out in Karachi's Gul Plaza, a large shopping center with 1,200 stores, killing six people, including one firefighter. More than 20 others were injured. The blaze started on the ground floor and spread quickly to upper floors, engulfing almost the entire building. Parts of the mall, covering 8,000 sq m, have collapsed, making rescue efforts difficult. Local workers say the mall contained flammable materials like plastic foam, cloth, carpets, and perfume, which fueled the fire. Twenty fire engines are trying to control the blaze. Smoke was still visible on Sunday morning. The police surgeon, Summaiya Syed, confirmed six bodies were moved to Civil Hospital and said mass disaster protocols are in effect. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow and called for a full safety review of commercial and residential buildings in Sindh province.
