US Kills Senior Militant in Syria Linked to Deadly Ambush on American Troops
January 18, 2026
The US carried out another airstrike in northwest Syria on Friday. The strike killed Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, a senior militant connected to Al-Qaeda and tied to the December 13 attack that killed two US soldiers and a civilian interpreter. The soldiers killed were Sergeant Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar and Sergeant William Nathaniel Howard. The civilian was Ayad Mansoor Sakat.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the killing and said it is part of a wider campaign against terrorists. CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper said, "The death of a terrorist operative linked to the deaths of three Americans demonstrates our resolve in pursuing terrorists who attack our forces." He added, "There is no safe place for those who conduct, plot, or inspire attacks on American citizens and our warfighters. We will find you."
President Donald Trump ordered the strikes after the ambush. He described the militants as "ISIS thugs" trying to regroup after the fall of Syrian leader Bashar Assad. Trump also noted Syrian forces are working with US troops in the fight against the Islamic State group. He said Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa was "extremely angry and disturbed by this attack."
The operation, called “Hawkeye Strike,” includes US partners such as Jordan and Syria. So far, the coalition has targeted over 100 IS infrastructure sites and weapons caches. This latest strike marks the third round of US retaliations following the deadly December attack.
