Software Engineer Dies After Car Plunges into Water-Filled Pit in Greater Noida
January 18, 2026
A 27-year-old software engineer died after his car lost control and fell into a 20-feet deep water-filled pit in Sector 150, Greater Noida. The pit was dug for an under-construction building's basement. The incident happened early on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
The police received information around 12:15 a.m. that a car had gone into a pit near Sector 150. Rescue operations were launched immediately. Teams from the fire department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local police worked together.
The victim was identified as Yuvraj Mehta, a resident of Tata Eureka Park society in Sector 150. He was a software engineer working in Gurugram and was returning home from work when the accident occurred.
Additional Commissioner of Police Hemant Upadhyay said, "The search operation was carried out with the help of the NDRF, SDRF, fire department and local police. The body was recovered at around 4 a.m. on Saturday (January 17, 2026)." Preliminary investigations suggest that fog and overspeeding caused the car to cross a drain and fall into the pit.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is ongoing.
Local residents protested against the Noida Authority, blaming negligence. They said similar accidents had happened before and authorities were repeatedly asked to install barricades and reflectors near the drain for safety.
One protester said, "Residents had requested the Noida Authority to install barricades and reflectors, but no action was taken."
