Kerala Tourist Dies in Arunachal During Rescue at Frozen Sela Lake
January 18, 2026
The body of Madhav M., the second tourist from Kerala who drowned in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district, was recovered on Saturday morning, January 17, 2026. Madhav, 26, was part of a group of seven tourists heading to Tawang. Police said he drowned while trying to save another tourist after the thin ice on the high-altitude Sela Lake cracked under his weight. Another tourist, Binu, died on Friday, January 16, 2026, while trying to help Madhav rescue a third person, who survived the incident at 13,700 feet. Tawang Superintendent of Police D.W. Thongon said a combined team including district police, State Disaster Response Force, Indian Army, Sashastra Seema Bal, and Indo-Tibetan Border Police retrieved Madhav’s body. “After the post-mortem, the bodies were handed over to their friends and relatives. The bodies are being taken to Guwahati by road and then possibly flown to Kerala for the last rites,” he said. The autopsy reports are expected within two to three days. A State Health Department vehicle transported the bodies to Guwahati. Mr. Thongon said the district administration will propose barricading the lake to the State government. He added, “Tourists become excited after arriving at the scenic Sela. We often issue advisories, and there are warning signboards advising them to stay off the frozen lake.” The five remaining tourists are now safe and staying at nearby Army camps.
