The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has scheduled a meeting with Ladakh civil society leaders for February 4, 2026. This is the next round of talks by the High Powered Committee (HPC), led by the Minister of State for Home Affairs. The last meeting took place three months ago, on October 22, 2025. After the October talks, MHA officials asked the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) to submit a draft framework for constitutional safeguards as per their demands. These two groups represent the Leh and Kargil districts respectively and are key parts of the HPC. The previous talks resumed a month after police action killed four people, including a Kargil war veteran, during protests for Ladakhi statehood. LAB and KDA demand inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to gain tribal status and statehood. They also seek the release of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, jailed in Jodhpur Central since September 26, and others arrested after the violence. Compensation for families of the deceased and injured is another demand.
